Simply put, a design system is a set of reusable components that can be put together for different purposes. Brand systems often go hand-in-hand with a style guide that shows how the assets can be used and why. For example, a design system may include:

A component library is a tool that’s often shared between designers and developers. As you can imagine, creating this library can take time but once completed, it is easier to maintain your brand when developing new web pages or components for other technologies, like a company app. Each component should have:

Pattern libraries feature collections of UI-element groupings or layouts. Pattern libraries are often thought of as less robust compared to component libraries, but they can be as thorough or as high-level as needed. They typically feature content structures, layouts, and/or templates. Much like the components, the patterns are meant to be reused and adapted.

If you’re familiar with marketing terms, you might think it sounds like a design system is the same as a pattern library. This isn’t far from the truth, but there are some key differences:

A pattern library consists of groups or collections of UI elements, typically ones you’d use together regularly. For example, a pattern library might include a page layout with banners, buttons, dividers, and more that you can use whenever you need to generate a new page.

A design system, however, features these UI elements separately along with other assets. You’ll find a pattern library in a design system as one of these elements, though.

From a designer’s perspective, having pre-made user interface elements makes their job much easier. It becomes a case of selecting what they need from the pattern library and assembling them into the end product. Scalable design systems mean you can grow your digital products when needed with much less effort.

But this also helps user experiences. Ideally, a client shouldn’t notice your company’s design system assets because this means you’re using them correctly. Style guides help here – they allow you to create consistent elements that lead to positive user experiences.

To create a design system that can be scaled, you’ll need to round up all of your brand assets and create a document that encompasses it all.

First, review your company’s visual elements and build a catalog of UI components and design elements to form the foundation of your design system. You can also identify inconsistencies that have emerged like colors outside of your palette or even improper use of your logo. *gasp*

Second, set up clear principles on how you think about your product and create a set of guidelines for how you'll bring them to life. Design principles lay out the branding vision for your product, including how you want customers to feel while using it. Do you want customers to feel calm? Excited? Curious? Do you want your brand to feel friendly? Quirky? Cerebral? Your design system should outline how you can make customers feel the way you want with your design.

Third, take the catalog of visual elements from step one and the principles from step two and compile them into one handy resource and distribute it to your team.


Be sure to document what to do if someone finds an inconsistency in your design system and the process to follow to update your design library.

In theory, once you’ve gathered all this information, you’ll have the basic elements of a design system. From there, it’s simply a case of collecting and organizing the assets so they’re helpful for future designers.

With the update, building out pages on your store is much easier. Adding sections to enhance product pages with additional benefits, tables and photos are now as easy pie. Before, store owners couldn't add, remove or rearrange sections outside the homepage. With the changes that 2.0 brought to the table, you can now add rich flexible content to most pages, including your about, contact, and product pages.

Our partners have noticed that stores on 2.0 have gotten a speed upgrade. The reason for that? Some features that required 3rd party apps have now been included in the base-level theme of Shopify. Less 3rd party integrations mean less code and faster loading times for prospective customers.

Forget about toggling between multiple screens to edit a theme. Today, developers can make these changes and implement custom features effortlessly within the same window. They’ve also added new development tools, features, and APIs to enhance your eCommerce experience even more!

How do I Upgrade from Shopify 1.0 to 2.0?

, we have great news! You might already have access to these incredible features. The update from 1.0 to 2.0 was automatically done a while back. However, some themes didn't get updates to the new framework meaning they can't take advantage of all of the benefits we've listed above.

To find out if your current theme offers an upgraded 2.0 theme option, reach out to theme support for instructions on utilizing the upgraded version.

In the rare circumstance that you've got a fully custom-coded theme or an altered theme, you'll have to alter it by making changes to your code.

We wouldn't recommend this option if you don't have experience coding websites. Instead, we'd suggest 

 to upgrade your current theme to Online Store 2.0. By migrating your existing theme templates to the new theme architecture, you can upgrade your existing theme to Online Store 2.0.


We recommend you upgrade to Online Store 2.0 only if you have previously edited HTML, CSS, or Liquid code to create a theme that is uniquely yours. If you're rocking a custom theme that was made just for you, then upgrading it yourself might be difficult. You may want to contact the developer or agency that built the theme to help facilitate the transfer.

Once the structure has been built on Online Store 2.0, you'll need to follow it up by transferring the copy (or text) from the old site to the new one. When you do, think about optimizing your content to capture additional organic search traffic.

Black Friday is November 25, 2022 and as we get into November you’re going to see even more promotional-centric messaging in the weeks leading up to the holiday. Chances are, you’ve already seen some messaging hitting your inbox already. While you don’t need to offer 50% off your products for the entire month of November, you can tell your fans exactly what they’re getting when you open the flood gates. Spreading the message earlier gives customers the change to plan ahead for your product.

Not every brand can afford to offer steep discounts on their products for Black Friday & Cyber Monday. If you’re in a position to discount, then by all means, go for it. If you aren’t, another great strategy is to focus on the release of a new product or service. New releases are an exciting moment for every company - leveraging that buzz can help your new product release cut through the noise that comes with this holiday. Organic interactions on social media are oftentimes more effective than paid ones because you’re engaging with a captive audience. And people that are already following your story could be even more interested in a new product release even if it’s not discounted.

Most online advertisers like Google, Meta, TikTok, etc run their ads on an auction. There are only so many eyeballs to go around so as more and more businesses put dollars into these platforms it increases the price each impression can be sold for. That means your ad dollars might not go as far during a crowded holiday like BFCM.

In early November, try implementing strategies to get more people onto your email list. Social Media giveaways to collect emails can be an effective strategy where you can leverage your products as the prize for potential customers. Once you’re fortified your list, you can send engaged subscribers special offers instead of trying to blast that message using Google or Facebook. Subscribers' familiarity with your company gives you a better chance to offer messaging that suits their desires.

How to Get the Best ROI From Your Email Marketing Campaign

You may have some customers that only interact with your business when you have a sale and others that wholeheartedly support your message and products. Understanding who those customers are and how to talk to them is a great way to take your Cyber Monday strategy to the next level. To segment your messaging, you’ll need to understand which customer is which.

You have the option to set up customer segments but what’s even better is that this software automatically sets up segments of “potential customers” and “churn risks”. You can further segment your list by engaged (opened email or clicked email in the last 90 days) or unengaged (received at least 5 emails, hasn’t opened or clicked in 90 days).


Once you know who is who, you have the opportunity to talk to them differently. One option this Black Friday is to send your best offer to your most engaged subscribers. You know that they’re receptive to your messaging, and it’ll take less convincing to get them to make a purchase. Then, if you don’t want to offer a discount to everyone, try sending a smaller discount to the unengaged list. Depending on how they interact with it, you may be able to consider them an engaged user in the future or someone who’s no longer interested in what you have to offer. That isn’t a bad thing, either. If you’ve determined that a portion of your list isn’t interested in you offers anymore, you can focus on talking to the ones who want to listen.

Ecommerce brands have a special weapon up their sleeve that other websites don’t - Product Reviews. On the technical side, product reviews are a way to keep your website updated with new content. In July, Google rolled out an
